MySQL Community Edition MySQL Community Edition is the freely downloadable version of the world's most popular open source database. It is available under the GPL license and is supported by a huge and active community of open source developers. The first step is to download MySQL server. Go to the MySQL web site and select the version that matches your version of Mac OS. Archive version. After the DMG file finishes downloading click on it to open. Then open the installer inside and follow the installation steps. MySQL Connector/J is a Java library, and it is a pure Java driver, so it is platform independent. The various installers offered on the download page are just to simplify installation (although generally, installing Java libraries using an installer makes very little sense to me). Choosing the right file: If you have an online connection while running the MySQL Installer, choose the mysql-installer-web-community file.; If you do NOT have an online connection while running the MySQL Installer, choose the mysql-installer-community file.; Note: MySQL Installer is 32 bit, but will install both 32 bit and 64 bit binaries. To start the installation of MySQL on your Mac, you need to download it first. Here is aMySQL 5.6 download copy. There may be newer and better versions of MySQL, so depending on your preference, use your favorite browser to search for and download whichever version you prefer.
There are three ways of downloading and installing MySQL on Mac:
- Download via the website from MySQL and install it manually.
- Via Homebrew Machttps://brew.sh/index_de
- Via Dockerhttps://hub.docker.com/_/mysql. This is actually the fastest and best way because you can easily switch between many versions and it takes 2 to 5min to get it up and running. But, we’ll cover that in another post.
Our focus is on the community version (recommended). On the download page, the system picks up your operating system automatically. If it does not pick your Mac OS automatically, you can choose your version before downloading it.
You will see three versions – DMG, TAR, and TAR Test Suite archives – choose the DMG archive. When you click the download button, it takes you to another page and asks you to sign up or log in. Instead, at the very bottom of the page, hit “No thanks just start my download”.
When the file has downloaded, double click on the .pkg file to launch the MySQL installer. Follow the prompts to install. At some point, it will ask you for your password – enter your Mac OS system password and click okay. The installation will start automatically.
On the pop-up window after MySQL installation, save the temporary password generated at installation. You will use that password when you first log into your Mac MySQL server.
The next step is confirming whether the installation was successful. Click on the apple icon at the top left of your desktop > system preferences. You should see the MySQL logo on the system preferences page which signifies the successful installation of your MySQL 5.6 download.
Open the application and click on the Start MySQL Server button to start the server. It will ask for your Mac password again and show that the server is now running. Now that your MySQL download Mac and installation is complete, the next thing you need to do is connect to your MySQL server.
In this post, we will briefly look at two ways of connecting to your MySQL server and access the database.
How To Connect To MySQL Server Via Terminal
The first task is to set your MySQL download mac location in the .bash profile. This will allow you to use one MySQL command from anywhere in your terminal that will be recognized and automatically connect you to your server.
To set the location, open the terminal and ensure you are in the home directory. Use the command:
to confirm you have a .bash profile. If you do not have one, use the command:
to create one. To open the profile, use:
and press enter.
Export the command:
to your bash profile. This is the location of your MySQL installation – save and close the file.
To connect to the server using the command line, open a new terminal and use the command:
The command will connect to your MySQL server as root using the password you saved after installation.
Once you connect to your MySQL download mac server for the first time on the terminal, change the password to the one you prefer using the command:
Change MyNewPass to your preferred password and hit enter.
You can verify your password change by opening a new terminal and attempting to connect to your server using the new login details.
How To Connect To MySQL 5.6 Download Server Using MySQL Workbench
On the downloads section of the MySQL website, scroll down to workbench and choose to download the DMG file. Once the file is downloaded, click on it to open. The next pop-up window will prompt you to drag MySQL Workbench to your applications folder. Proceed and wait for the copy to complete.
From your Mac’s launchpad or Applications folder, search for MySQL Workbench and launch the application. Once open, you will see a MySQL connection option with your MySQL server details given that your server is running. Once you click on the option to connect, it will prompt you to enter your MySQL server password.
Once you log in, you will be directed to the MySQL Workbench interface from where you can interact with your MySQL server.
With the simple steps above, you can download, install and interact with MySQL for Mac within minutes.
Welcome back to another SecuringNinja tutorial. No cyber security researcher should be with out a database to practice their skills on, or just to store tons of relational data. Today we will show you how to install MySQL on a Mac. Having a local database is perfect for running websites locally, or for providing persistent storage for another application.
In this article we cover how to:
MySQL is very straight forward to install on a Mac. If you do not already have the Homebrew package manager for Mac you’ll need to install that first. If you would rather not install Homebrew you can also install MySQL using the DMG file available on the MySQL site.
Installing Homebrew on Mac
Lets start by opening up Terminal and installing Homebrew. Homebrew is a macOS package manager that makes installing packages on macOS a breeze.
To install Homebrew on Mac run the following command:
Once the install is complete go ahead and run an update to test that everything is working correctly.
With Homebrew installed it is a simple matter to install MySQL.
Installing MySQL on Mac with Brew
Installing MySQL with Brew is a breeze. All it takes is:
Mysql On Mac
This will install the most recent version of the package available on Brew. As of this writing it is MySQL version 8.0. To install a different version simply append the version to the end of the package with an @ symbol. For example, to install MySQL 5.7 use:
Install Mysql In Mac
If you don’t want to install Homebrew you can also install MySQL with the DMG file available for download as described below.
Installing MySQL with a DMG file
You can also install MySQL via the DMG file on the MySQL downloads page. This will add a MySQL preference pane in System Preferences as well. You can start and stop your server from here too.
First begin by downloading and mounting the DMG file available from the MySQL Community downloads page. Make sure you grab the appropriate DMG for your OS version.
Mount the DMG and double click the .pkg file to begin the installation.
Step through the installer installer and make a note of your temporary root password. You will need this for the initial connection to the server. DO NOT LOSE IT!
The server will require that you update your password on the first login. MySQL server is now installed. To start the server use launchctl or the MySQL preference pane in System Preferences. The server uses very few resources while running in the background so there really is no need to start and stop the server each time.
To start the server via launchctl:
This instructs MySQL to start when the system boots up.
You can also start and stop MySQL through the System Preferences pane. Open System Preferences and select MySQL:

And finally, start or stop the server as needed.
Install Mysql Mac Os
From this preference pane you can also edit the MySQL server configuration, re-initialize the database, and uninstall MySQL server entirely. We cover how to uninstall MySQL on Mac in the next section.
Uninstalling MySQL on Mac
If you installed MySQL via the DMG file method then uninstalling is extremely straight forward. Navigate to the MySQL preference pane in System Preferences, and click Uninstall. Thats it! MySQL has been uninstalled.
If you however installed MySQL using the Brew method described above, then there are a couple of extra steps.
Uninstalling MySQL on Mac with Brew
The steps below show how to uninstall MySQL installed with Brew. Begin by finding any running MySQL processes and stopping them. Then uninstall MySQL and remove all files.
